MGTU 410 Week 1
Discussion 1
Week One Discussion:
There is a Need
Go the website for the city that you live in currently or would like to
reside in within the foreseeable future. See if you can find a need for
something that you might be able to bring to that city (and write a business
plan about) over the next eight weeks of this course. The purpose of your plan
is for you to develop an innovation for that community from a Fortune 500
company. This is a ranking of the Fortune 500 companies: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune500/. Work closely with
your instructor to determine the right size of innovation—if it is too large or
too small, you will have difficulty with the Financials in Week 5.
Note: In order to choose a company, you must put that company in this
discussion thread. Students may not use the same company—first come first
serve. Also, please do not email your instructor with your company choice. All
students must have approval of their company before the end of week one.
Procrastinating on your choice of a company creates a delay that students often
do not recover from in this class. So please work very hard this week to
determine exactly the right company and innovation.
You have a wide range of ways that you could bring value from opening a
new business, to ways to improve city government (probably save them money).
Think about your personal strengths and see if there isn’t a match for what you
city needs and what you could bring. Go to this Website and poke around and
find something that might help you bring more value to your city: http://www.nlc.org/
Post your initial response by Wednesday midnight. Additionally, you will
engage in discussion Wednesday through Sunday by responding to at least three
of your classmates’ postings, offering thoughtful and supportive comments.
See Rubric in Course Information details on what a high-quality
Discussion Thread comment looks like, i.e., one that receives full points.
