Discussion Forum Thread Three
Often times, students confuse my push
for making sure citations are present whenever factual information is being
referenced as too much attention to APA formatting. However, this particular
teaching moment is not about formatting at all. Formatting involves where
we place parenthesis and commas and period. It also involves too much or not
enough information about the source/author. Formatting is important and minor
deductions will be made on assignments without proper APA formatting of in-text
AND reference citations. However, giving proper credit to sources through
immediate and continued citation is a way to avoid plagiarism. We
tend to think of plagiarism only in terms of copying a paper from
a friend or an online source, but it is so much more than that. Even
unintentional plagiarism is a serious offense. I equate it to stealing. Therefore,
I do hope throughout this course everyone learned the importance of always
citing information borrowed from another source and to always have scholarly
sources to back up what you say in an educational setting, unless you are
clearly only being asked for your opinion. After you have read this thread and
checked out the attached video (Kait, 2015), please post
a response on whether (or not) you understand the difference between formatting
and plagiarism. Note: I have also added my own video under Start Here regarding
plagiarism. Be sure to watch and comment on expectations here.
