Application Activity: Flat Screen TV

In our modern era, digital television is a norm, and most homes have HDTVs. HDTVs are usually rectangular in shape and have a standard aspect ratio of 16:9. Please respond to the following questions. (See rubric below.)

1.      What do we mean by aspect ratio?

2.      In a paragraph or two, at least 100 words, what is an HDTV? Explain the meaning of HDTV. How is an HDTV different from previous ordinary televisions?

3.      Derive a formula for the area of the screen of an HDTV as a function of only the height of the screen.

4.      Derive a formula for the diagonal of the screen as a function of the height of the screen.

5.      Derive a formula for the diagonal of the screen as a function of the area of the screen.

6.      Illustrate with a graph the relationship between the diagonal and the area of the screen. Please make sure your graph is appropriately labeled.

7.      What is the diagonal if the area is 2,823 ?
