Week 5: Discussion: Your Portfolio (or LinkedIn Profile) & Cover Letters

Hello Everyone, and welcome to our Week 5 discussion!  Our discussion will extend your learning and practice of the information in the lesson about creating a career portfolio and writing targeted cover letters. We will begin with some self-reflection on making the most of your own e-portfolio and then talk about best practices for effective cover letters.

For this week's initial post (due by Thursday, February 4), please answer both Part 1 and Part 2 below with a minimum of one paragraph for each:  

Part 1: Take a moment to reflect on the many projects, certifications, courses, and teams you have been a part of. Do you have documentation of these accomplishments? The portfolio (your LinkedIn profile) is your chance to show off a comprehensive collection of these highlights from your life experiences. What is one thing that is interesting, or that you are proud of, from your life's accomplishments that you could add to your LinkedIn profile page?  (You don't need to actually add it right now, but just describe what you might consider adding in your post.)  For example, think of something that could be indirectly job-related because it demonstrates that you are goal-oriented, good at planning and organization, good at follow-through, creative, good at achieving results, etc.  Identify what you could add, and explain why it might have career or job relevance.

Part 2: The authors of our text recommend using a cover letter in your job search in addition to your resume and job application.  Do you agree that a cover letter is important?  Identify at least one thing you might include in a cover letter that would add value to your job application beyond what would already be addressed in your resume and job application.
