Week 1 - Discussion 1

Audience Analysis

As a first step in completing your Final Project, which is due at the end of the course, you will offer a detailed analysis of your audience. As you already know from your earlier English courses, it is important for writers to consider their audience so they can ensure that a given communication will be successful. For this assignment, you will provide a detailed analysis that includes specific information about the audience who will read and hear the message you convey in your Final Project.

First, contact someone (in person, online, or via telephone) in the field in which you wish to work. Refer to the guidelines in Chapter 4 (see the “Gathering Information” section) of the textbook to help you to successfully interview this person. Focus the interview on business communication, written reports, and professional presentations in your chosen field. You may contact local business professionals, small business owners, mentors, or anyone from the list on pages 621-623 of the textbook.

Next,  using the “Audience Analysis (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.” document, information gathered through your professional interview, and information from Chapters 4 and 16 of the textbook, post an audience profile by Thursday, Day 3 that explains who your audience will be for your Final Project (due in Week Five). In your audience profile, be sure to:

a. Identify the primary audience.

b. Explain the audience size and geographic distribution.

c. Explain the audience composition.

d. Describe who your interview subject was and summarize the interview results.

Guided Response: You must respond to at least two classmates by Monday, Day 7. However, to help encourage a thorough and lively discussion, it is recommended that you post your first responses by Saturday, Day 5, remain active in the discussion throughout the end of the week, respond to all follow-up questions, and continue to interact with and support one another. Cite your sources in APA format as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..

At least two responses must be peer reviews of your classmates’ audience analyses and must include suggestions to help your classmates identify:

a. Audience members’ level of understanding.

b. Audience expectations and preferences.

c. Probable audience responses (see pages 456-457, especially Figure 16.2).
