Topic 1: Systems of Equations

•           Think of a scenario where you will need to solve using 2 equations and 2 unknowns. Make sure you make up your own problem. Then show how you set up the problem and how you solved the problem.

•           Example: Joe has to buy tickets to a concert. Let's say he does not know how many adult and how many children's tickets he will need. That is what to solve for. But since the problems are made up one needs to know the answers ahead of time. Let's assume Joe needs 15 adult tickets and 20 children's tickets. Let's say the adult tickets are 10 dollars each and the children's tickets are 7 dollars each.

•           To set up the problem use 15+20 = 35 tickets and 15(10)+20(7)=150+140=290 for the cost of the tickets

•           Problem: Joe has to buy tickets for a concert. How many adult and how many children's tickets will he need if the total number of tickets is 35 and the total cost is 290?

•           Variables: x=adult tickets and y=children's tickets

•           Equations: x+y=35 and 10x+7y=290

•           Now multiply the first equation by -10

•           -10x-10y=-350

•           10x+7y=290

•           Add the 2 equations

•           -3y=-60 so y=20

•           x+20=35 substituting in the first equation

•           Answer: x=15 adult tickets and y=20 children's tickets

Be sure to include all the steps above when setting up your problem. Then check 2 classmates problems and respond to them. Be sure to be encouraging.
