Week 2 Forum: Moving Beyond the Equations / Linear Algebra History
Linear Algebra History
Linear Algebra has a
long and fascinating history that dates back at least 2000 years to ancient
China, and has continued to modern times. Today, linear algebra is used in
computer programming to do such things as blur images, search for specific
images within larger photographic backgrounds, and do audio and video
compression.
For this week’s forum,
find one topic that is covered in the textbook. It need not be something we
cover in weeks 1-2, it can be from anywhere in the textbook. If you prefer to
work from a list, I have included a number of Linear Algebra topics in the file
attachment posted below.
Be sure to pick a topic
that nobody else has picked yet. You are welcome to post a note early in the
week to “claim” your topic.
Please put the topic
you chose in the subject line heading of your initial post.
Then do a little
research on the internet to find out the history of that topic. Who discovered
it and when? Is there an interesting story behind how it was discovered? What
else can you tell us about your topic?
Be sure to include the
source(s) you use in your post.
Sometimes students will
create an original math homework-type example as it applies to a particular
situation, and even work out the numbers, but not do any internet research.
Note, however, that the intent of this forum is to do outside research each
week and find an application online that you were unfamiliar with, then
describe that application in your post. So you will always have outside sources
to cite.
Instructions : Your
initial post should be at least 250 words. In addition, please respond to at
least 2 other students. Your responses should help develop discussion around
the topic/feedback that your classmate presented. Responses to students should
be a minimum of 100 words each.
