WEEK  1

WEB 240 Week 1 Individual Assignment Website Brainstorm

Instructions: Throughout this course, you will work on developing a comprehensive website plan and functional 3-page website based on a topic of your choice. Each week, you will complete and submit an individual project developing your website plan and website. Website Brainstorm: Resource: Use the "Web Design Best Practices Checklist", Table 3.1, of Basics of Web Design: HTML5 & CSS3, 3rd Edition to guide your review. Think about a type of website such as a resume site, product site, or information site that you would like to create for this class. Find and compare two websites of a similar type. Review each website and pay attention to:   

• Page layout
• Navigation
• Color and graphics
• Multimedia
• Content presentation
• Functionality
• Accessibility
• Brower compatibility Create a 1-page document or 7-slide PowerPoint® presentation comparing the two sites against each other and the Website Design Best Practices Checklist (located in the activity resource). Additionally, consider what design features you will add to your site and why. Submit your file or document to the Assignment Files tab.

WEB 240 Week 1 Individual Assignment HTML5 Basics

Instructions: Using the course software and Week One Template as a starting point, create a new HTML webpage and include the following:   

• Write the code to display your name in the largest-size heading element.
• Write the markup language code for an unordered list to display the days of the week.
• Write the markup language code for an ordered list that uses uppercase letters to order the items. This ordered list will display the following: Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter.
• Modify the following code snippet to indicate that the bolded text has strong importance: <p>A diagram of the organization of a website is called a <b>site map</b> or <b>storyboard</b>. Creating the <b>site map</b> is one of the initial steps in developing a website </p> Submit your HTML file to the Assignment Files tab.

WEEK  2

WEB 240 Week 2 Individual Assignment Website Plan

Instructions: Complete a first draft of your Website Plan, that includes the following:   

• Topic of website
• Purpose of website
• Intended audience/visitors of website
• Content outline for homepage and at least two sub-pages
• A visual mockup of the website layout Submit your Website Plan to the Assignment Files tab.

WEB 240 Week 2 Individual Assignment Website Development

Instructions: Using the course software, create the first page (home/index page) for your website that demonstrates effective application of design elements based on your website plan. Include the following:    • A single page named index.html   

• Effective use of color, images and font
• Proper page markup language

Save your website page as index.html. Validate your HTML code using the Markup Validation Service on the W3C® website, (www.w3.org) prior to submitting your web page(s). Note: Your website does not need to be fully functional (for example, links may not work yet), but it should open up in a browser and include all design elements. Incomplete portions of the page should include text to indicate what is planned for that area. Submit your compressed (zipped) files to the Assignment Files tab.

WEEK  3

WEB 240 Week 3 Individual Assignment Expanded Website Plan

Instructions: A Site Map is a diagram, similar to an organizational chart, which shows a visual mapping of your site and how the pages will be linked together. Add a Site Map to your website plan. Submit your Expanded Website Plan to the Assignment Files tab.

Instructions: Using the course software, expand the basic homepage from Week Two to a site that includes at least three web pages. Incorporate the following into your expanded website:   

• Apply Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to format elements.
• Integrate multimedia into the website.
• Create navigation for the site.
• Use internal, external, and anchor links in the website.
• Apply best practices and principles of design. Validate your HTML code using the Markup Validation Service on the W3C® website, (www.w3.org) prior to submitting your web page(s). Submit all website files in a compressed (zipped) folder to the Assignment Files tab.

WEEK  4

WEB 240 Week 4 Individual Assignment Refine and Finalize Website

Instructions: Simple web forms can be used for order forms, a subscription to a newsletter, or a request for contact. Using the course software, refine and finalize your website by doing the following:   

• Add a simple web form.
• Use division or a table to structure the form elements.
• Finalize a navigation system between the pages. Note: Utilizing the server-side elements offered in the textbook for testing forms is allowable. Validate your HTML code using the Markup Validation Service on the W3C® website, (www.w3.org) prior to submitting your web page(s). Submit your website files in a compressed (zipped) folder to the Assignment Files tab.

WEB 240 Week 4 Individual Assignment Expanded Website Plan

Instructions: Expand your website plan. Select at least three interactive features that could be added to your site. Identify the following:   

• What purpose would each feature serve for your site and its visitors?
• How would you construct these features? Note: The form created in the next individual activity, "Individual: Refine and Finalize Website" can be included as one of the interactive features. Submit your expanded Website Plan to the Assignment Files tab.

WEEK  5

WEB 240 Week 5 Individual Assignment Website Submission and Maintenance Plan

Instructions: Using the course software, develop a simple JavaScript® element for your website and develop a website maintenance plan. Validate your HTML code using the Markup Validation Service on the W3C® website, (www.w3.org) prior to submitting your web page(s). Include the following in the maintenance plan:   

• Based on your usability test, what steps will take to update and improve your website?
• Will you register a domain name and host your website live? If yes, with what host?
• How else will you continue to maintain your website? Submit your website files and maintenance plan in a compressed (zipped) folder to the Assignment Files tab.

WEB 240 Week 5 Individual Assignment Usability and Accessibility Test

Instructions: Perform a usability test on your website home page. Develop questions and work with a peer to answer questions on your site usability. Run an automated accessibility test on the home page of your school website. Use both the Web Aim Wave (http://wave.webaim.org) and ATRC AChecker (http://www.achecker.ca/checker) automated tests. Describe the differences in the way these tools report the results of the test. Did both tests find similar errors? Write a half-page report that describes the results of the tests and includes your recommendations for improving the website. Submit your report to the Assignment Files tab.
