To assess your ability to:

·         Analyze an observational study.

· Identify the characteristics of a study such as a sample, population, sample size, sampling method, etc.

·         Identify bias in the study if any.

·         Create and interpret various graphical and tabular representations of data.

·         Identify the characteristics of statistical graphs.

For Part I: The Gallup Organization (www.gallup.com) or Pew Research Center (www.pewresearch.org) provides data on all aspects of lifestyles of people around the world.  There are many other organizations who try to determine what the public is thinking about a certain topic by conducting scientific polls. Try to find a report at an opinion poll source(Gallup, Pew, or any other) that lists as much information as possible. The report should site the title and source of the study. You need to include the link to the report of the poll  to this assignment.

For Part II: When a data set is given, the easiest way to see what the data set tells us is to make a picture of it! In this assignment, you will create a histogram and frequency distributions using Excel, then cut and paste them into a Word document. All the work that is done in Excel should be pasted on the same Word document. Before you use Excel to create the histograms and frequency distribution tables, you need to install the Data Analysis Tool Pack as an Excel add-in. To install the Data Analysis Tool Pack, complete the following steps:

1.          Click on the Microsoft icon or the File tab (upper left corner of Excel).

2.          Choose Excel Options (bottom of the choice box).

3.          Choose the Add-ins option.

4.          At the bottom, click "Manage Add-ins" or choose Excel add-ins and click "go."

5.          Make sure "Analysis Tool Pack" is checked.

6.          Click the "OK" button.

7.          You will be instructed to restart Excel.

1.      Download and print out the Week 1 - Application Assignment.

2.      For Part I, find an opinion poll report to complete the assignment by typing your responses in this word document. Make sure you include the link to this report.

3.      For Part II, download and use this data set to build a histogram. You can read this document or view this short video to see how you can make a histogram using Excel.

4.      Complete the tasks and answer the questions in the assignment document. 

5.      Copy the distribution tables and histograms that you create in Excel and paste them in to your assignment document.
