COMM 150 Week 5 Weekly Matinee 5 | Discussion 2 | Communication Assignment Help | Franklin University
Weekly Matinee 5
Purpose
To assess your ability to:
· Identify the characteristics of social relationships in the workplace
· Identify the characteristics of friendships
Action Items
1. Watch the film clip from The Joy Luck Club found in Reading & Preparation.
Film Summary: Rose asks her husband Ted what he wants for dinner that night. "You decide," he answers. Rose's responses of "Oh, I don't care," "You've had a hard day," and "I just want you to be happy" reveal her accommodating style of dealing with conflict. She has silenced her opinions in their marriage and has lost her sense of identity. Ted is frustrated by his wife's lack of input and wants some productive conflict. "I'd like to hear your voice, even if we disagree," he says. "You used to have an opinion. We used to argue." The fight leads them to discuss marital separation.
2. Answer each of these questions:
a. Which style of conflict management does Rose employ in this scene?
b. Why might Rose have chosen this style of conflict management?
c. Why does Ted become upset with Rose?
d. Can a person be too giving? Why or why not?
