 Ethics Discussion

·         To compare virtual communication tools and ethical considerations for using them.

Overview

Recently the news has been filled with ethical questions relating to social media and the workplace. There have been reports of employers requesting access to potential employees’ personal Facebook accounts, “googling” potential employees to see if anything nefarious turns up, and other online discovery methods for gaining insight into what a potential employee may bring with them to their workplace. The digital environment and access to personal information have allowed employers unprecedented insight into potential employees’ personal as well as professional lives.

This dual access raises ethical questions on behalf of both the employer and employee. What do employers have a right to view? Who can have access and to what information? Whose responsibility is it to make sure the lines are clearly defined for employers and employees? The article below discusses how to avoid some of these caveats of the digital environment as it relates to the workplace.
