SCIE 210 Week 3 Discussion | Science Assignment Help | Franklin University
Week 3 Discussion - Fallacies
Purpose
To assess your ability to describe
and illustrate the concept of fallacy with common examples from the studies of
logic and science.
Overview
In this assignment, you will
describe a fallacy without identifying the type of fallacy it is. Classmates
will read your work and one classmate will classify the type of fallacy you
have described. Then, you will indicate whether the classification is correct
or not, and why. You will conclude by discussing why science attempts to avoid
fallacies at all costs and why this is so crucial to the progress of science.
Action
Items
- Review the readings and videos for this week.
- Access the Internet and other resources to locate an
image (such as a cartoon) that illustrates a common fallacy. Go to this link to see an example (The Gambler's Fallacy).
- Post the link to the image/cartoon you located and
describe what the image is illustrating.
- Review your classmates' postings and respond to one
person who has not yet received a response. Identify the type of fallacy
and discuss why you have chosen to identify it as that type of fallacy.
- Within 48 hours of the due date, read all of your
classmate's postings and comment where appropriate (i.e., whether you
agree with what others wrote regarding the stated fallacies, etc.).
- After at least one classmate has responded to your
original posting, respond by indicating the type of fallacy your
description illustrates.
- Explain why you think avoiding fallacies would be
crucial to the progress of science and illustrate with an example from
science.
