Discussion 1

Phonological Awareness

As discussed in Chapter 5 of our text and in the video Building Literacy Competencies in Early Childhood (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., exposure to stories, poetry, nursery rhymes, and songs encourages literacy development (Coats, 2013).  Identify a piece of poetry, a nursery rhyme, or a song that can be used to encourage literacy development.  Describe three different ways you would use this piece to help build phonological awareness.  In addition, be sure to discuss how building these phonological awareness skills will promote literacy development.

Guided Response: Review and respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts.  Imagine you are a school principal or center director who has just observed an instructor teaching a lesson using one of the ideas your classmates mentioned for developing phonological awareness.  As you observed the lesson, you noticed that some students appeared to easily master the concept while others were struggling. Share an idea for how teachers can help a student who is struggling with phonological awareness.  Also, share an idea as to how teachers can enrich phonological awareness for a student who already has the concept mastered.
