Week 3 Introduction Draft

·         APA Paper Template

·         Instructions for the Introduction - Word document

·         How to Write the Introduction for an Argumentative Essay
Minimize Video- This video explains the purpose of the Introduction and examines some example paragraphs. You are writing an Argumentative Research Paper, not a 5-paragraph essay, so your Introduction will be 1 - 2 full pages, not a paragraph. In addition, the examples use "I will argue that..", but you are discouraged from using "I will, I think, I believe, I feel" or any other personal pronouns (me, we, us, our, my, you, your) in your paper.

Introduction examples:

·         Death Penalty Introduction example - This document shows an introduction for a paper on the death penalty. Highlighting in the document points out relevant features.

·         Punitive Discipline Introduction example  - This example from a former student shows a typical 2-page Introduction. Scroll to page 3 and review the introduction as well as the comments. You'll see how she has incorporated both context and background to her Introduction, and included a clear thesis statement.

·         Guided Imagery Introduction example - This sample introduction has been adapted from an APA resource. Though shorter than the requirement for this section, this sample demonstrates establishing importance, including historical/contextual detail, and defining uncommon terms.

Instructions:

1.      Download the APA Paper Template to your computer. This document is already correctly formatted in APA format. Open and type your Introduction directly into this document, saving with a different name--"Research Paper Introduction" for example. Retain the original blank APA Paper Template for use in future classes.

2.      Write your introduction.

3.      Submit your introduction to this assignment link which will return a TurnItIn score. If you have issues with correct use of academic sources, then you must self-correct before you hand in a revised draft during week seven.

A high matching score from TurnItIn means that you are quoting too much, or your Introduction is short compared to the number of sources you have cited.  Your paper should be no more than 15% quoted material.
