The Declaration of Independence is a cornerstone of American thought regarding freedom and happiness. Thomas Jefferson was heavily influenced by philosophers of the period, and the document is frequently referred to as a blueprint for an effective government. Often quoted from the Preamble is this passage: â??We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.â?
