BUSI 342 ASSIGNMENT

There are many benefits to belonging to a union. Our text tells us, "Unionization often occurs when employees feel disrespected, unsafe, underpaid, and unappreciated; they see a union as a viable option for change." (Mathis, 2017). Unions can back employees up when there are situations where the employee is being treated unfairly. Unions are more popular in larger corporations than they are in smaller corporations. Many times in larger corporations, there are company politics that are raised where unions become involved to help settle disputes. In the situation where a good company to work for was losing contracts and revenue, it would be obvious that certain costs would need to be cut in order for the company to continue to prosper and survive. Most employees want to feel as though when they work hard there is an incentive. They want to feel as though they will be rewarded by their hard work and have something to work for. People work to receive a paycheck and support themselves and their families. When they are in jobs where they feel as though there is room to receive more compensation, then they are usually satisfied. Merit pay is pay that is designed to compensate employees for a job that is well done. The Bible has a lot to say on how our attitudes should be in regards to hard work. One verse says, "Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us." Titus2:7-8 (ESV). God wants us to always represent Him and have a good attitude no matter what we do for work. God wants to reward us some day for the good work that we do even if we are not always rewarded on Earth. In a situation where employees are frustrated and talking of unionization, I as the Human Resources manager, would feel that it would be important to develop guidelines for the supervisors to respond to the employees' questions about unionization. One of the guidelines that I would have would be to supply accurate information on unions. Another guideline that I would implement would be to provide the pros and cons of unions and provide specific examples of pros and cons to unionization. I would have the guideline that supervisors were to supply information on unions and not sway them in either direction. In aNew York Timesarticle, it talked about how there were many downsides to unions. It described that they "brought corruption, nepotism and rigid work rules to the labor market, impeding the economic growth that ultimately makes a country strong." (Kristof, 2015). The article also talked about how there many positive sides to unions though. It talked about how unions helped to "maintain a system of checks and balances for flawed corporations." (Kristof, 2015). In this situation, supervisors must follow what is legally permissible. I would make sure that the supervisors knew that it is an employee's right to join a union and that the company could not prohibit employees from joining the union. I would make sure that they provided the most adequate information possible to let each employee make their own judgment call. Kristof, N. (February 19, 2015). The Cost of a Decline in Unions.
