Week 8 Discussion
"Standardized Achievement Tests " Please respond to the following:
- From the e-Activity, imagine you are writing a letter to the editor of your local newspaper about your local school district’s math achievement test scores. Suggest at least three (3) approaches that you believe school leaders, parents, and teachers should take in order to improve student math scores. Provide specific examples in which these approaches have been successfully implemented to support your response.
- Watch part of this hour video focusing on Michelle Rhee as lecturer at Cornell University, former chancellor of schools in Washington, D. C. She improved graduation rates, test scores, and learning outcomes more than in the previous 40 years in the public school system. Only 8% of students in D.C. were at grade level in math. D.C. students started on par with other places, in 3rd grade they were far below; poor black 4th graders in NYC were two grades ahead of those in D.C. More money was spent per child, $17,000, than any other place in the U.S. Where was the money going? Find out what happened and what Ms. Rhee did to remedy this situation. Can you use any of her ideas for changes in the school district you have chosen for your class assignments? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91kRgrqKN34Here is an article that updates what happened after Rhee left: https://www.usnews.com/opinion/knowledge-bank/articles/2017-04-20/michelle-rhee-set-national-example-of-education-reform-in-washington-dc
