IES-VE MODELLING Assignment Question

  1. Introduction:

The IES-VE (integrated Environmental Solution – Virtual Environment) is the tool of simulation which aids to provide the professional of design with a range of variables in analysis building simulation. Moreover, it offers ApacheSim method in order to analysis the process of heat transfer of building thermal simulation. The tool of simulation was examined via the IES ASHRAE 140 and it is eligible as a model of dynamic in the classification of CIBSE system. In addition, the software system provides the building with more environments space and permitting their optimization taking into account standards for instance comfort and energy.

In fact, Apache is the most one usually used, it discusses the building thermally delivering steady- state and dynamic of energy uses and thermal condition analysis. There is relationship between the ApacheSim and Macro FLO dynamic software for natural ventilation and HVAC in order to achieve leaks of air and daylight and shading analysis.

The report discusses and analysis the thermal condition of the building and finding the values of heating and boiler load using CIBSE load and AphcaeSime calculations which encountered the boiler required by the client. Additionally, the building includes one-story retail space with roof and it located in Edinburgh. As given in the brief, From Monday to Saturday the building is conquered. Moreover, the report will compare and analysis the boiler and heating load in three different positions. The first one, requirement of peak heating constructed on a worst case design scenario. Secondly, running the boiler on/off instantaneously for hours of occupied and finally the boiler must run on/off more steadily by using a 12C.

  1. Methodology:

At the beginning, all the features of the building were entering in IES-VE software by using “ModeIT” option, the area of the building plan as shown below about 88m2.

The building involves three windows with different dimensions, the two which is placed in East and west facing of the building has same area of 10m2 and the other window is located in south direction has 3m2 with one main door is 4m2. The angle of building roof is 30° and with zero overlap.

  1. CIBSE load Boiler Load Calculations Method:

From Main System option, all details of thermal condition of building were entered for both retail space and the roof. The heating of the main space was on continuously with constant set-point of 19C while the cooling in off situation, but the cooling and heating system of the building roof as both in off continuously. There are no changes in main system and internal heat in thermal templates option of the building. All construction of building has infiltration by around 0.40 ac/h and auxiliary ventilation of retail space of 10l\s\person when 6 people present inside the building. From apache, the file of weather should set up to Edinburgh weather. In order to know the boiler load by using CIBSE load must be run after all this steps. Moreover, using vista form the analysis of boiler load and heating plant results were recorder and charted as graphs or table.

  1. ApacheSim Dynamic Simulation calculation method:

In this section of calculation there are two situations:

  1. The requirement of heating for occupied hours when the boiler switching off/on instantaneously:

In this position the roof thermal was remained same as before, on the other hand the thermal retail space template was changed. In addition, by created a new profile of daily by selecting Apache profile database manager from the Main system option. Additionally, by values of modulate heating system was on position from 8 at the morning to 5pm and set up all his details to the profile of weekly which involve all seven days of daily profile, however on Sunday and holiday days both were in off continuously. There is nothing modified in infiltration details and the operation profile of heating condition room was changed that by choosing the weekly profile data with 19C which is constant amount. In this part, the details of internal heat again were entered where 6 persons was present, there are computers with 5w/m2 and the lighting of tungsten by around 25W/m2 of power. All the changes were selecting to the retail space of the building. Next step by choosing Suncast option to measure Edinburgh position of solar and shading of module. Lastly, in order to calculate the new boiler and heating load results after changing the detail of room condition, internal heat gain and air exchange, the dynamic simulation of ApacheSim was run and showing the result by graphs by Vista selection.

  1. By using the option of ramp the boiler switching on or off steadily:

All the details remain as the first part of ApacheSim Dynamic Simulation calculation method but the heating condition was changed by using a new daily and weekly profiles. In fact, in this part of calculating the profile of daily is made with the values of absolute rather than modulating values. The heating system of the building usually switched on position at 12C, however during six to nine morning period it reaches the set-point of heating needs which is 19C and it creates a ramp line. on the other hand, from 9am to 5pm from time of day it stays constant (19C) and at 5pm the values decrease to 12C as the graph below shows. As we did in the first part of this calculation the profile of daily was adding to the weekly profile for all the days of the week and switched off on the Sunday and holiday time. Next all this steps, from main system form the heating option was modified with the new weekly profile formed. Moreover, the thermal template of the retail space is saved and calculating the new readings of boiler and heating load by using he dynamic simulation of ApacheSim option.

  1. Results:

The IES-VE software has delivered boiler and heating load details at each positions of the modelling methods. In fact, all the peak heating load and boiler load are both calculating on vista option. In addition, as known from the option of thermal template helps to analysis the boiler efficiency.
