What is the rationale for the use of Sacubitril
& valsartan in heart failure?
Over the last few years, heart failure has become a
major public health issue in the United States, with more than 1 million people
hospitalized yearly.(Ho Je, Lyass A, Lee DS, et al, 2013).Many medications
have been used to treat heart failure.Sacubitril/Valsartan is a first in class
medication that has proven to reduce the mortality rate in patients having
chronic heart failure. The rationale of this medication is that, according
research, it does two things.
It breaks down B-type Natriuretic Peptide (BNP), which has a
beneficial effect in the treatment of heart failure.
It inhibits the formation of angiotensin II.
Angiotensin II causes angioedema, which is bad for patients with heart
failure. So by inhibiting angiotensin II, it eliminates the adverse effect of
fluid buildup.
There's a lot of
technicalities to the pathophysiology of Sacubitril/Valsartan, but the above
mentioned point are a gist of the benefits of the combination medications.
