Kearney-Nunnery (2020) describes 5 themes of essential nursing leadership competencies derived from a qualitative study with nursing leaders from a variety of leadership positions. These are:

·         Communication proficiency with an emphasis on listening skills

·         Conflict resolution skills

·         Ability to communicate a vision, motivate, and inspire

·         Ability to use data and technology in decision making and fiscal saviness

·         Courage to be proactive with change and not reactive and crisis driven

Evaluate your own level of competency in these areas and then speak to when you had an occasion to demonstrate any of those skills in practice and where would you like further professional development to be most effective. Remember that leaders are not only chief nursing officers and managers, but those who mobilize individuals to achieve great things.
