There are basically three requirements to meet when posting to the Discussion Board:

1. You must post on one of the discussion topics to receive full possible credit.  Do not respond to all questions for that week.

2. Do not retell plot or story; in your post, address the specific discussion called for or the question being asked. Get straight to the point. You should total a minimum of 150 words for your response to receive full possible credit.  Generally, your response should not require more than 250 words at most; otherwise, the writing tends to get tangential, unnecessarily wordy, or repetitive. 

3. You must submit your response by the deadline or you will not receive any credit. Unlike the essays, there are no late submissions.

These requirements will apply to all subsequent discussions as well. There are four discussion posts assignments in this course. Each is worth 25 points.

All posts need to be in your own words, employing your own thoughts and ideas based on the assigned reading materials. You are not to use any other sources. Do not cut and paste from the Internet! You are learning how to analyze an element of literature in a literary work.

Use complete sentences. Students are expected to write on a college level; you will also be graded on your writing skills. Poor writing skills impede a clear communication of your ideas.

All discussions are due on the Sunday after the Monday on which they are assigned, just as most of the other writing assignments are also due on a Sunday. So, for example, Week One begins on the first day of the class and is due on the subsequent Sunday.

 Week One Discussion Choices:

If you have reviewed the short story essay assignment, you will see that some of the questions here can form the basis for a more detailed essay. Thus, if you should decide to write your short story essay on plot, character, setting, or symbolism, you can use this discussion assignment to help you formulate your ideas for your longer short story essay. 

1. Discuss the elements of plot structure (exposition, complication (rising action), crisis, climax, falling action, and resolution) as they occur in one of the short stories assigned in the "Learning Activities" section of Lesson 2. If someone has already posted on the plot of a particular short story, choose another story or another discussion topic.

2. Discuss characterization in one of the short stories assigned in the "Learning Activities" section of Lesson 2. While every story has a main character, generally a protagonist, there are other characters in the story created to complete the characterization and motivations of the main character and give the story meaning.

An analysis of characters in a story helps to reveal the meaning of a story. Characters can be described as round (complex, multi-dimensional) or flat (no growth, one-dimensional), dynamic (experiencing change) or static (no change), stock and/or stereotypical, or foil. Review the "Sample Short Story Analysis Essay" resource in Lesson 2. If someone has already posted on the characterization in a particular short story, choose another story or another discussion topic.

3. Discuss setting (time and place) in one of the assigned short stories. How does the setting create an atmosphere that establishes the tone of the story? If someone has already posted on setting in a particular short story, choose another story or another discussion topic.

4. Discuss symbolism used in one of the assigned short stories. Symbolism further extends meaning in a story. If someone has already posted on the use of symbolism in a particular short story, choose another story or another discussion topic.
