Genogram

Construct a detailed, 3-generation genogram of the fictional family below. In constructing the genogram, follow these guidelines:

  • Use the correct, commonly-used symbols.

  • Draw a circle around the family living in the home.

  • Illustrate relationships. Include the marital/significant other/divorce status for each member.

  • Include demographics for each member: give his or her name, age, cause of death, occupation, physical/emotional problems.

  • Indicate the strength of ties among members, using appropriate symbols. Highlight relationship dynamics, including conflictual/enmeshed/distant, etc.

  • Indicate illness and deaths. Write out a brief description or use appropriate symbols.

  • Indicate significant life events or stressors for members, using a brief description.
  • The Family
  • The Smith family immediate household consists of Fred (father), Jane (mother), adopted Latino son Rico, daughter Becky, and daughter April.
  • The parents married in 2002. Fred, 42, has a part-time job in a factory which he dislikes greatly, believing it's beneath him and providing him with insufficient pay. Jane, 36, has a mental health disability (major depression) and a below-average IQ, which prevents her from holding steady work. She sees a psychiatrist regularly.
  • Rico, 20, is unemployed but still living at home and going to the tech school to become an AODA counselor; he was into drinking in high school but is now in recovery in a 12-step program, trying to improve his life. He still has a few using friends from that past life but is passively trying to let those relationships fall by the wayside.
  • Becky is 15 and in high school but just found out she's pregnant with a boyfriend (Devin age 17) who the parents strongly disapprove of; they fear he may even be a gang-banger. Becky receives special education services at her school; she has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and is sometimes compliant with the medications prescribed by her psychiatrist. Becky was placed in foster care not long ago and the foster family has told the parents that they're willing to take her back, if need be. Becky babysits part-time for families she has met through Devin's family.
  • April is 12 and in her second year of middle school and has already experimented with pot, after beginning to hang out with friends who the parents are unfamiliar with. April sees a court-ordered child therapist but dislikes being held accountable by her and often states "I hate going to her - she doesn't care about me." April's county social worker has been involved with her for 2 years but tends to feel sorry for April because of her overriding belief that she sometimes gets "lost" in the family difficulties.
  • Rico's biological father Ricardo who is 44, lives nearby and resents his parental rights being terminated long ago. Fred and Jane have allowed him to have limited/monitored phone contact with Rico but the dad appears to be sabotaging Rico's relationship with Fred, which appears to be very good. Fred resents this greatly and creates much tension between the 3 of them. Ricardo's wife Consuelo died in 2006. Ricardo is an itinerant worker and is in the U.S. illegally. Rico has 1 sister and 3 brothers from his biological family.
  • Jane's mother Barb, who is 54, interferes in the Becky situation at times and believes she needs strict punishments for her mood-driven behaviors, as well as needing birth control, which Fred and Jane are opposed to. This creates a tense relationship between Barb and Jane. Jane's father, Carl, who was a construction worker, died in 2009; he had reportedly been very close to Becky and favored her. Jane has 2 older sisters, Loretta age 40 and Bea age 41. Carl and Barb never married. Carl worked for the railroad and Barb is a CNA. Loretta is unemployed and Bea is an administrative assistant.
  • Fred's parents are Mary, 62 and Andy, 63, who divorced in 2009. They are both retired, having owned a family business in the past. Andy has struggled with alcohol abuse in the past but never received treatment. Andy believes Fred is too soft on discipline with all his kids and this has created a rift in their relationship. Fred has one brother, Jim, who is a 38 year old car salesman.
