Privacy Policies on
web sites probably do not do what you might expect them to do. They do not
necessarily protect much of your privacy. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
enforces the policies, but only to the extent that the policies are fraudulent
or deceptive. For example, if a company says that it will never sell your
information, but it does, the FTC might go after them. But if the company says
that it will collect every piece of information about you that it can possibly
collect, and then sell it to whomever wants to pay cash for it, the FTC will
have no problem with that. So guess what company's privacy policies
state? You guessed it!
Choose either
Facebook, Google, or Apple and thoroughly read through its privacy policy
(found on its web site). Write an essay that summarizes what that company does
with your data, how (or if) it protects your personal information, and what
surprises you discovered when you analyzed its policy. Make sure to discuss in
detail some of those examples.
