Choice of Business
Joanne Howard, aged 36 is considering starting a small business as a confectionery store. She has worked as an employee for many years but now feels she wants to run her own business. Joanne has done all her research and feels that the business will be very profitable.
In terms of the appropriate business structure, Joanne has narrowed her choice down to either:
 a sole trader; or
 a proprietary company (where she will be the sole shareholder and sole director).
However, she has two major questions:
(i) What issues should she consider in relation to her self-employment situation if she operates her business as a sole trader as distinct to being an employee of her own company?; and
(ii) How can she get money out of her business to meet her own personal day-to-day living expenses? Students should compare this from a perspective of being a sole trader compared to the situation of her operating a company.
Prepare a summary of your findings for both (i) and (ii) above in a tabular form.
Note: Remember, you do not have to make a decision for her; you just have to provide her with appropriate information that will enable her to make a decision herself.
