Super Duper XXII Computer
You are the project manager for a company that manufactures communication applications for cell phones and digital TVs. The company employs 5,000 employees who telecommute and are located in North and South America. Each employee is supplied with a company-owned laptop computer and cell phone. Your supervisor just notified you that it is time to upgrade the computers and cell phones at the company. You are in charge of the SuperDuper XXII Computer and Cell Change-out Project, scheduled to start next year on January 1 and to be completed by October 1. The budget has not yet been established, but a few known facts are: •The new computers retail at $1,000 each, with a 10% discount. •The software upgrades will run about $500 per computer. •You are considering hiring an outsourcing firm, and initial project proposals from 3 vendors show an average cost range of $200,000-$300,000 for a turnkey operation. •The IT department employs 350 employees. •You plan on using 10% of the in-house staff to help with the project rollout. Using your Office Project software, sketch out your action plan. Use the action plan to develop the work breakdown schedule (WBS) as follows: 1.Create a list of between 5-20 major activities that need to be undertaken and completed, in the general order of how they would occur. This is Level 1 of the action plan. 2.Next, break out each of the Level 1 items into 5-20 deliverables, moving to Level 2. Then, break out Level 2 items into deliverables, moving to Level 3. Keep going with continuous level deliverables until there is no reason to continue. 3.Include the following: â—¦Deliverables â—¦Responsible individual or department â—¦Contractual commitment â—¦Planned actual completion dates â—¦Planned completion dates for Milestones â—¦Planned costs for the scheduled activities 4.Add the organizational chart that you developed. 5.Apply the project management concepts discussed in Weeks 1-3 to this information technology refresh project. This information will also be used in next week- individual project to identify some of the most challenging parts of project management.
