My Grandmother
My grandmother is a strong and independent woman. She is also the wisest person I know. I have learned so many things from her throughout my thirty seven years. The memories created with her and my grandfather are engr aved within me. Her stories of how she had it tough in the thirties w ere remarkable. It helps me today to keep my head held high, because it will never be as bad as grandmother had it. When I was ten years old, my grandparents and I would read a book from the Bible every evening before sitting down for dinner. These traditio ns that I am remembering i s why I chose to write about my grandmother. Three years ago, she lost my grandfather, and she has learned how to move on past the sorrow and hurt to take care of herself and her family. For the past thirty years, it has been tradition to spend Christmas morning at her house in the country. When my grandfather was alive, he would bake an entire Christmas breakfast, and she would prepare the home for the 20+ guests. But, when he died, she took on his role, and now bakes the whole meal herself. She is a determined woman, and does not want us to see her as a weak widow. This week, I sat down and “interviewed” my grandmother, which really just amounted to catching up and getting to know her on a more personal level. When I asked her if she remembered those Christmas gatherings from long ago, she smiled brightly and said, “Oh, of course I do. Those were the best years of my life. Christmas was always my favorite holiday, especially when I got to spend it with my entire family”. I mentioned Grandpa- famous Christmas ham, and she laughed. “It took him years to finalize that recipe, and get it exactly how he wanted. The first year it was overcooked, the second undercooked, but the third year it was just right”. When she talked about my grandfather, it was a bittersweet moment. I could tell she was sad that he was gone, but at the same time she deeply cherished the memories they had. Her only regret was that she “wished [she] had more time with him”. I was so glad I had a chance to sit with her and rekindle about her past. My grandmother is such a strong woman, and sometimes I don’t think she takes enough time to remember the good times her and my grandfather had. After the interview, she had to excuse herself. I know she was about to cry, but did not want to break down in front of me, her only grandson. I only hope that someday she learns how to find a balance between strength and sorrow.
